MegaFon agrees overhead power line deal with Siberian utility

29 Sep 2011

According to unsubstantiated press reports, Russian mobile operator MegaFon has signed an agreement with utility company EuroSibEnergo to leverage its overhead power lines to extend its growing fibre-optic network into Siberia. The companies are also expected to open up their existing networks to one another for the leasing of capacity. The move is likely to act as a precursor to MegaFon commencing commercial broadband services in Eastern Siberia. Initial press reports indicated that the cellco had inked the agreement with YES Energo Ltd, but TeleGeography notes that YES is actually a 50/50 joint venture between EuroSibEnergo and China Yangtze International, which was formed to develop a number of hydro and thermal power projects in Eastern Siberia.
