Israeli cableco HOT Telecommunication Systems is thought to be preparing the launch of broadband packages offering download speeds of 20Mbps and 30Mbps, Globes Online reports. At present the operator only offers either a 12Mbps service or a 100Mbps option, and has not provided speeds in between these as it claimed that there was no demand for mid-range speeds. However, it is understood that increased competition from fixed line incumbent Bezeq – which has recently reduced the cost of its broadband tariffs – coupled with a rising demand for mid-range broadband speeds has prompted HOT to reconsider its position.
As noted in TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at the end of June 2011 HOT remained Israel’s second largest broadband operator in terms of subscribers, with a retail customer base of 759,000. By comparison, market leader Bezeq had 1.088 million high speed internet subscribers at that same date.
