China-Taiwan cross-strait cable given green light

Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) has approved the construction of a submarine cable linking the island of Kinmen with the Chinese mainland at Xiamen. The connection will improve the reliability of services and reduce the cost of cross-channel communications. However, the 2km cable required the permission of the Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Justice, the National Police Agency of the Ministry of the Interior and the National Security Bureau to allay fears that the cable might pose a potential threat to national security. The link is expected to cost TWD1 billion (USD33.2 million) with funding for the project coming from Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Telecom and Far EasTone Telecommunications, as well as Chinese telecoms operators China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom. Despite investment coming from Chinese operators as well as Taiwanese, spokesperson for the NCC said that Taiwanese telcos would not be using any equipment produced in China.
