Cellcom issues tender for 4G upgrade

22 Sep 2011

Israeli mobile network operator Cellcom is reportedly looking to the future, with Globes Online noting that it has published a tender for the upgrade of some 800 cellular sites. It is understood that as part of the tender Cellcom is looking to have the base stations upgraded to handle fourth-generation Long Term Evolution (LTE services), despite not actually holding permission or spectrum to launch the advanced technology. Sweden’s Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) are thought to be in the running for the contract; the latter actually won a previous tender published by Cellcom in which the cellco sought upgrades at 600 cellular sites.
