MTN Liberia partners Ecobank to launch ‘Mobile Money’

MTN Liberia (formerly Lonestar Communications) has formally launched a ‘Mobile Money’ service in the country in partnership with Ecobank-Liberia, AllAfrica.com reports. The new service enables MTN subscribers to access money via their mobile phones. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Mobile market leader MTN Liberia, backed by South Africa-based MTN Group, commanded 51.0% of all users by the end of June 2011, ahead of second-placed Cellcom, with 25.2%. Third place was claimed by Comium (21.3%), whilst Atlantic West International’s Libercell trailed a distant fourth, with a meagre 2.5% market share.
