DTAC’s 3G service endorsed by Attorney General

The Office of the Attorney General has issued a ruling approving Thailand’s second largest mobile operator DTAC’s commercial 3G cellular services, reports the Bangkok Post quoting Minister of ICT Anudith Nakornthap, who was informed by CAT Telecom, the issuer of DTAC’s build-transfer-operate (BTO) licence. DTAC last month officially introduced commercial 850MHz W-CDMA/HSPA services after expanding its trial service. According to the operator, it had the right to offer 3G commercially via formal permission for the usage of the 850MHz band for UMTS services received from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission. DTAC says it already has 430,000 3G customers. It also reports a current total of six million data service users including 2.8 million ‘smartphone users’, and expects to reach 7.5 million data users by year-end and ten million in 2012.
