DoCoMo to offer free Wi-Fi by year-end, Nikkei says

Japan’s leading mobile operator by subscribers, NTT DoCoMo, is planning to make its Wi-Fi service free to subscribers by 31 December 2011, the Nikkei business daily reports. According to unconfirmed reports from the newspaper, DoCoMo will spend JPY10 billion-JPY20 billion (USD130 million-USD260 million) to up the number of Wi-Fi hotspots in service to 30,000 from the current 6,800 by the summer of 2012. Ultimately the cellco plans to increase its Wi-Fi footprint to a total of 100,000 locations, the Nikkei said. DoCoMo’s principal rivals KDDI and Softbank Corp already offer free Wi-Fi services, the paper added.
