Telefonica’s Czech mobile unit has upped its 3G network coverage to 61% of the population – equivalent to 1,016 towns and cities – with plans to boost this to 66% by end-2011. The operator’s director of marketing Jiri Dvorjancansky is quoted as saying that in a bid to improve end user access to high speed data services his firm commissioned 127 3G transmitters over the summer. ‘Following our network sharing agreement with T-Mobile, we have already covered 228 sites with the 3G signal from the beginning of our cooperation,’ he added. According to Dvorjancansky, 1.3 million people are currently signed up to O2’s high speed data network, including 900,000 on mobile handsets and 400,000 via a laptop dongle. The cellco says this number represents the number of users who regularly use at least 50kB of data downloads per month.
