VIPnet trials 1800/800MHz LTE

5 Sep 2011

Croatian cellco VIPnet, a unit of Telekom Austria, has begun a small-scale trial of Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services in the 1800MHz and 800MHz frequency bands, providing data speeds of up to 150Mbps (download) and 50Mbps (upload) in the Novi Zagreb area. The trial is for 20 users selected via the company’s online social networking profile, allowing access to the new data speeds for two weeks. VIPnet previously presented LTE technology on a live system in the 800MHz band in March 2011, and is preparing to launch commercial 4G services in 2012, with nationwide expansion and a wide range of LTE-capable devices planned for 2013. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that VIPnet also tested LTE in the 1800MHz and 2.6GHz frequency bands in Zagreb in October 2010 under a temporary testing permit, whilst the cellco was awarded an 1800MHz operating concession for the first time in July 2011; the country’s regulator HAKOM has indicated that an auction of new frequencies suitable for 4G services, including the 700MHz-800MHz digital dividend, will take place in 2012.
