Albania cuts interconnection fees

1 Sep 2011

Albanian watchdog Autoriteti i Komunikimeve Elektronike dhe Postare (AKEP) has begun today the second stage of its reduction of interconnection fees. The two dominant operators, Albania Mobile Communications (AMC) and Vodafone Albania have had maximum interconnection fees decreased from ALL8.85 (USD0.09) per minute to ALL7.57 per minute, whilst for Eagle Mobile it was set at ALL8.85 per minute, down from ALL10.89 per minute. AKEP has set out a four-stage plan for reducing fees; this second stage is due to last until 31 August 2012, whereupon it will be decreased further. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in June 2011 AMC was the largest cellco by subscribers with a market share of 43.4%, whilst Vodafone represented 37.8% of customers and Eagle Mobile 18.8%.
