Russian mobile operator MegaFon has teamed up with Morsvyazsputnik – mobile satellite provider Inmarsat’s licensed operator in Russia – to demonstrate mobile connectivity in the Arctic Ocean. The field test took place onboard the nuclear powered icebreaker Yamal, which is operated by the Murmansk Shipping Company. Prior to the trial, Morsvyazsputink deployed an Inmarsat Fleet Broadband base station in the port of Tiksi, whilst MegaFon installed one of its femtocells onboard the Yamal. The trial successfully demonstrated mobile connectivity 30km north of Tiksi.
