Helios secures tower operating licence in Tanzania

25 Aug 2011

Helios Towers Africa has been awarded an operating licence by the national regulator, Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority TCRA), to operate an independent network of telecoms towers in the country. It is hoped the award will significantly benefit local mobile operators as Helios is looking to deliver higher quality service coverage to rural communities. In a statement Helios Towers said: ‘The tower sharing plan also allows increased competition between operators, lowers costs for customers, and improves environmental conditions by reducing the number of towers built.’ In December 2010 Helios Towers Africa bought a total of 1,180 telecoms towers from Tigo Tanzania, for USD80 million in cash.
