NTC confident its decision on PLDT-Digitel merger will meet deadline

22 Aug 2011

Gamaliel A Cordoba, the head of the Philippines’ National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), says that he is confident the agency will rule on Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company’s (PLDT’s) proposed takeover of Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc (Digitel) in time to meet the two firms’ own deadline of Friday 26 August for the PHP69.2 billion (USD1.628 billion) deal to take place. With PLDT threatening to turn its back on the acquisition plan, Cordoba is quoted as saying that the NTC will make its decision on or before the telco’s internal deadline. ‘We are also considering their deadline so we are trying to work within [it],’ the official said. ‘We are still doing our evaluation. We have revised [the] draft [decision] a lot of times already because this is being studied well,’ Cordoba added. It is expected that a copy of the final draft decision will be distributed to ‘all concerned agencies’ this week.
