Rostelecom launches NGN in Astrakhan

According to Telecompaper, Russian national operator Rostelecom has extended its next generation network (NGN) to Astrakhan, a major city in southern European Russia, which lies on the bank of the Volga river. The telco has reportedly launched 25 access nodes in the city, comprising around 25,000 wireline connections and over 2,500 xDSL ports in central Astrakhan. Further, a fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) network has also been launched in the region, with approximately 5,000 Ethernet ports installed. Rostelecom is believed to have 34,000 broadband subscribers in the city, including 3,500 corporate customers.
