17 Aug 2011

Cisco has announced that German cable operator Kabel Deutschland (KDG) is deploying its Cisco ASR 900 Series Routers to aggregate and distribute enhanced video, data and voice services throughout its converged Internet Protocol Next Generation Network (IP NGN). The upgraded network will enable future services such as 3D TV channels and faster broadband speeds and help to meet rising consumer bandwidth requirements. In addition to video and voice services, the increased scale of the upgraded network will also facilitate future services that will offer internet speeds of up to 1Gbps. The platform is designed to deliver capacity of up to 96Tbps per system and utilises the modular Cisco IOS XR software operating system, which simplifies network operations while enabling comprehensive system redundancy and network resiliency. ‘With the Cisco ASR 9000 Series, we have gained significant technological, operational and financial advantages,’ commented Lorenz Glatz, CTO of KDG, adding: ‘The Cisco ASR 9000 Series is designed to address the massive surges in video traffic that are beginning to flood IP networks and positions us to meet the bandwidth challenges of the future. The Cisco IOS XR is amazingly stable and robust, both key requirements for a nonstop video experience.’
