UOL posts second-quarter loss as costs spiral

Brazilian internet services provider (ISP) Universo Online (UOL) booked a net loss of BRL7 million (USD4.32 million) in the three months ended 30 June 2011, reversing a profit of BRL31.2 million in the same period a year ago, as costs leapt 76.8% year-on-year to BRL79.9 million. On a more positive note net revenue increased 55.7% over the same period to BRL308.9 million as subscriptions grew 8.7% to 1.763 million. UOL said it had more than 1.324 million broadband and 439,039 dial-up subscribers at 30 June. According to Ibope/NetRatings surveys, the ISP closed out June as Brazil’s leading internet portal with over 31.6 million visitor accesses – up 9.0% year over year.
