UK cableco Virgin Media is planning to extend its fixed line network to cover a further 100,000 premises across the country by the end of 2011, The Independent reports. With the operator’s infrastructure currently covering around 13 million homes and business, representing around half of all premises in the UK, the latest expansion will see Virgin extend its footprint in Southampton, with plans to more than double its presence in the city. According to the report, Virgin has already expanded its network to reach around 73,000 new homes this year, with cable rollouts having taken place in locations including Derry in Northern Ireland and Staines.
