MTNL close to concluding 3G roaming deal with TTSL and Aircel?

8 Aug 2011

State-owned telco Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) has reportedly finalised agreements related to allowing roaming over its third-generation infrastructure in the Delhi and Mumbai circles, according to India’s Economic Times. It is understood that MTNL has inked deals with both Tata Teleservices (TTSL) and Aircel under which both mobile operators will be able to utilise the MTNL 3G network in the two metros. Neither operator was successful in obtaining spectrum in the cities in the government’s much-delayed 3G auction, which concluded in May 2010. It has been suggested that the agreements will generate additional revenues of around INR2.5 billion and INR3 billion (USD54.97 million and USD65.97 million) per year. MTNL reportedly held a meeting with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) regarding the roaming agreements, during which, the final stage of the two respective deals were reportedly approved. The report cited MTNL chairman Kuldeep Singh as saying of the matter: ‘We are in discussions with both of them (TTSL and Aircel). We will shortly announce the final deal.’
