Regulator says mobile subscribers reach 15.7 million

Ecuadorian regulatory agency Superintendency of Telecommunications (Supertel) has reported that total mobile subscribers in the country reached 15.7 million at the end of June 2011, up by nearly 11% year-on-year. The report also said that 14.1% of mobile users were on post-paid monthly contracts by mid-2011. Market leader Conecel (Claro) had almost 70% of subscribers in the sector as of 30 June, ahead of Movistar Ecuador with over 28% share by the same date and state-owned Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (including mobile unit Alegro) with just under 2%.
