4 Aug 2011

Hong Kong mobile and fixed network operator Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings (HTHKH) has announced its interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2011, including mobile operations of Hutchison Telephone Company (3) and fixed network business of Hutchison Global Communications (which also uses the 3 brand for consumer services). Consolidated turnover grew by 41% year-on-year to HKD6.018 billion (USD772 million), driven by strong growth in smartphone sales and data services usage. Net profit attributable to shareholders of the company for the first half of 2011 increased by 37% to HKD494 million.

Turnover from 3’s mobile business for the first six months of 2011 increased by 61% to HKD4.553 billion compared with HKD2.831 billion for the same period in 2010, driven by increased smartphone sales. The mobile customer base grew to a total of 3.35 million at 30 June 2011, up from 3.05 million twelve months earlier, as a result of increased mobile subscriber penetration and growing smartphone acceptance, the company reported. The increasing smartphone popularity, coupled with greater demand for data-centric services, contributed to monthly mobile post-paid ARPU increasing to HKD238 in the period under review, up from HKD214 in 6M 2010, with a underlying 30% year-on-year growth in mobile data service revenue.
