Telenor Serbia finishes first stage of network reboot

2 Aug 2011

Telenor Serbia’s network renovation has reached a milestone, with the first region coming on-stream yesterday. Customers in the Vojvodina region now have access to theoretical maximum download speeds of up to 21Mbps, thanks to the HSPA+ evolution deployed there as part of the network’s revamp. Having started the developments back in mid-2010, Vojvodina is the first Serbian region to be completed, but Telenor expects the renovation to be finished across the entire country by early 2012. Telenor says that it is updating ‘all vital parts of the network, from radio and transport network to the core and service platforms’. The new equipment is being supplied by a variety of vendors including Huawei, Nera and Ericson. In addition, it is claimed that the upgraded infrastructure is more energy efficient, and will be able to support Long Term Evolution (LTE) in the future.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Telenor Serbia is the second company to launch HSPA+, behind Mobilkom Serbia which launched the service in six cities in February 2011. At the end of December 2010 15.6% of Serbia’s 9.9 million mobile customers were reportedly 3G users.
