Growth in customer base fuels 22% increase in net income for Entel

2 Aug 2011

Chilean telco Empresa Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Entel) has reported second quarter profits of CLP51.4 billion (USD112.5 million), up 22% from the previous year. Total revenue grew by 2.6% in the April-June 2011 period, whilst EBITDA was up 0.2% compared to 1Q11. The increase in profit was largely due to growth in Entel’s mobile customer base, which expanded by 22% to 8.3 million, compared to 6.8 million in the second quarter of 2010. Mobile broadband users saw the greatest increase, with year-on-year growth of 137%, up to 813,050 subscribers. Entel’s Peruvian operation, broadband provider Americatel Peru saw revenue growth of just 5% between 2Q10 and 2Q11, from higher average tariffs and higher traffic, but damaged by increased costs as a result of service expansion.
