Committee tells NT to abandon ‘bridging project’ and launch fresh tender

2 Aug 2011

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Nepal, the parliamentary special committee which provides the oversight of public funds, has directed national state-owned PTO Nepal Telecom (NT) to scrap a planned ‘bridging project’ designed to add around 1.5 million GSM and CDMA mobile lines in the country, and relaunch the tender from scratch. MyRepublica.com reports that NT had hoped to buy equipment for around 1.1 million GSM and 400,000 CDMA lines from an unnamed Chinese supplier through the bridging project, but the PAC has questioned the ‘fairness’ of the procedure. Given the current scarcity of SIM cards and lack of mobile capacity in the mountain Kingdom though, the committee has called on the telco to fast-track the new tender and launch it within 45 days.
