State-owned incumbent operator Nepal Doorsanchar Company Limited (Nepal Telecom, or NT) is planning to expand its broadband internet infrastructure by launching WiMAX-based services. The Himalayan News Service quotes NT managing director Vishwanath Goel as saying that his company plans to roll out 200,000 WiMAX lines to expand broadband coverage in 3,915 village development committees (VDCs) by 2012. Goel went on to say that the expansion forms part of a wider government-backed plan to offer alternative broadband access platforms in rural communities.
