Virgin completes trial of 1.5Gbps cable broadband

25 Jul 2011

UK cableco Virgin Media has announced that a three-month trial of what it claims is the world’s fastest cable broadband service, offering downlink and uplink speeds of up to 1.5Gbps and 150Mbps respectively, has been successful, according to Broadband TV News. It is understood that Virgin conducted the tests of the services in East London, using the same DOCSIS infrastructure that it currently uses to offer its existing cable-based broadband services to residential customers. Commenting on the development, Jon James, Virgin Media’s executive director of broadband, noted: ‘As people are simultaneously connecting more gadgets to the internet and doing more online than ever before, we wanted to explore what our unique fibre-optic network is capable of. At speeds of up to 1.5Gbps, Virgin Media is delivering some of the fastest broadband in the world and, thanks to our ongoing investment, we are able to anticipate and lead the way in meeting growing demand for bandwidth as future services and applications come online.’
