The number of third-generation subscribers in Vietnam has reached approximately eight million, around 18 months since UMTS services were first launched in the country, Sai Son Giai Phong Online reports, citing a spokesperson from the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC). According to the ministry, mobile network operators Viettel, Vinaphone, MobiFone, Hanoi Telecom (Vietnamobile) and EVN Telecom have built over 30,000 3G base transceiver stations (BTS) between them, with network coverage available in most of the country’s towns and cities. The service providers have generated almost VND3.6 trillion (USD173 million) from 3G services, mainly from voice services and data transmission, and have invested over VND1.7 trillion in third-generation networks.
