Thailand’s second largest cellco by users DTAC has reported total revenue for Q2 2011 of THB19.7 billion (USD658 million), a marginal increase of 0.2% quarter-on-quarter but a more encouraging 12.9% year-on-year rise, mainly driven by value added services including mobile internet, handset sales and improved penetration of smartphones in the subscriber base. In the three months ended 30 June 2011 EBITDA reached THB6.9 billion, declining 4.1% q-o-q but increasing 15.2% y-o-y, while net profit for the period fell 9.2% q-o-q to THB3.0 billion, although this was up 24.5% y-o-y. In 2Q11 subscriber growth slowed down from the previous quarter due mainly to seasonality. DTAC added a total of 383,828 net new subscribers in three months, the majority of which were pre-paid, taking its subscriber base to 22.7 million at end-June 2011, of which 10.3% were post-paid.
DTAC also noted that it plans to launch a commercial, expanded 3G service using the 850MHz frequency band in the third quarter of this year. It will initially operate over 400 W-CDMA/HSPA base stations, and plans to expand coverage with up to 1,220 base stations by year-end.
