DT eyeing Belgacom stake?

21 Jul 2011

Germany’s Deutsche Telekom (DT) is reportedly mulling the acquisition of a stake in Belgian fixed line incumbent Belgacom, Reuters reports, citing Le Soir. It is understood that the German giant expressed its interest to the Belgian government – which holds a majority 53.5% stake in the telco – earlier this year about a potential stake purchase. However, with Belgian politicians still working to form a coalition government it is claimed that DT has been told it will need to wait until the country’s political situation has stabilised.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, under Belgian law the state is required to hold a 50% plus one stake share in Belgacom, and while privatising the telco could prove controversial, the government in 2008 reportedly said it had no objections in principle to lowering its stake.
