At the end of June 2011 China’s three providers recorded a total of 906.77 million wireless customers. China Mobile gained an additional 15.95 million mobile subscribers whilst China Unicom and China Telecom showed similar results, increasing their customer base by 7.25 million and 8.12 million respectively. The 3G market also saw significant growth with each provider increasing their total by around a third from the previous quarter; China Unicom and China Telecom added 5.41 million and 5.17 million users, increases of 29% and 32%; China Mobile secured eight million more 3G users, bumping its total up by 30% to 35.03 million This brought the total number of 3G users in China to 80.5 million, 11% of the total wireless subscribers. The recent jump in 3G figures may be partly due to the excitement surrounding the imminent arrival of the iPhone in China, although the 3G sector has seen an explosion of growth since its deployment in 2008. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, the size of the 3G market leapt from 266,000 subscribers in December 2008 to 10.22 million the following year.
