China Telecom has announced plans to launch an MVNO in the UK next year to cater to the Chinese community in Britain and Chinese tourists. Ou Yan, manager of China Telecom’s European branch estimated a potential market of around 800,000 potential subscribers in the UK. The Chinese telco has not yet chosen a network to host the service and has not decided whether to brand the MVNO under the China Telecom name. Similarly, plans for a pricing strategy are still under development. Ou Yan described the UK launch as the ‘first step. Next we want to go into France, which has the biggest Chinese community in Europe, and Germany’.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at the end of March 2011 China Telecom was the 17th largest wireless operator in the world by subscribers, with 100.25 million users.
