Saudi Arabian mobile operator Etihad Etisalat, which operates under the Mobily brand name, and French equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent have announced the successful completion of a trial of the French firm’s ‘100G’ solution. Alca-Lu describes 100G as ‘a pillar of the Converged Backbone Transformation (CBT) solution – a key element of the Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network (HLN) architecture’. The solution is said to optimise the overall efficiency of an operator’s transport network, maximising bandwidth capacity whilst reducing network complexity. The completion of the trial – which took place in Jeddah – is expected to aid Mobily in the delivery of new services such as video-conferencing and high-resolution image transfer across its network.

Nicolas Bouverot, Alcatel-Lucent’s vice president for the Middle East, commented: ‘Our successful trial with Mobily confirms our continued leadership in optical innovation. As service providers focus on speed and capacity, Alcatel-Lucent is driving the adoption of ‘100G’ as a proven and tested solution that will meet our customers’ network needs, today and as they evolve’. Abdul Aziz Al Tamami, chief operating officer of Mobily, added: ‘Mobily is committed to providing its customers with innovative communications solutions. The introduction of ‘100G’ will allow us to meet the ongoing business and entertainment broadband needs of both current and new customers as we continue to grow our subscriber base in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’.
