MTC filling in the gaps

6 Jul 2011

Namibia’s largest cellco by subscribers Mobile Telecommunications (MTC) has announced that it is in the process of extending its network coverage to additional areas across the country. The GSM/W-CDMA operator declared in its company reports for 2010 that it had increased its population coverage from 95% to 98%, although its territorial footprint is thought to be closer to 60%. However, in reports from local press, comments from MTC corporate affairs officer Tim Ekandjo, briefing the Parliamentary Standing Committee on ICT, were interpreted as showing that although MTC’s network covers at least 90% of ‘geographical locations’, the ‘actual’ population coverage is just 64%. Ekandjo said MTC recently finalised strategic plans with all 13 Regional Governors to identify areas that are not covered within each division.
