MCIT tasked with ICT promotion

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has been tasked with introducing a number of measures to promote the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the country, under the government’s Action Plan for 2011-2015. reports that the action plan forms part of the State Programme for Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development for 2008-2015, approved by President Ilham Aliyev, and mandates the MCIT to promote the implementation of advanced telecommunications technologies, such as WiMAX, UMTS and Long Term Evolution (LTE). In addition, the MCIT is expected to prepare a proposal in cooperation with the Tariff Council of Azerbaijan to optimise telecoms tariffs to stimulate the growth and development of the sector. The plan also tasks the ministry with developing e-government in the country in order to improve governance and to continue structural reforms.
