China’s 3G network continues to grow

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has announced that 714,000 new 3G towers were built in the year ending May 2011. The largest operator by subscribers, China Mobile, built 214,000; China Unicom built 274,000 and China Telecom 226,000. China’s 3G market has continued to expand, reaching 73.76 million subscribers at the end of May according to the MIIT. Since March 2011, the subscriber base has grown by around a fifth (19.17%).

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, between March 2009 and March 2011 the number of 3G subscribers increased from 450,000 to 61.895 million.
