Chilean broadband and fixed line provider VTR has pushed back the launch date for mobile operations to early 2012. In a conference at Chicago’s Cable Show, Mike Fries, the CEO of parent company Liberty Global Inc (LGI) announced that the mobile network will come on-stream in the first quarter of next year. It purchased a licence in September 2009, securing 30MHz of spectrum in the 100MHz and 2100MHz bands. The network, which is being rolled out by Huawei and Qualcomm was originally expected to be ready by the second half of this year.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at the end of March 2011 VTR was Chile’s second largest broadband operator, with 37.4% market share and 437,220 VoIP subscribers in December 2010.
