According to Reuters, Spain’s Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio (MITYC) has announced that it has selected a total of eleven operators to participate in its auction for 58 blocks of mobile spectrum in the 270MHz band. The final list of pre-approved bidders includes the country’s three dominant mobile operators: Telefonica Moviles Espana, Vodafone Spain and Orange Espana; alternative telecoms operator Jazztel; Basque Country-based telco Euskaltel; Grupo Corporativo ONO, Spain’s largest cable operator by subscribers; WiMAX operator Telecom Castilla la Mancha;
Public Works and Telecommunications Navarra; the Consortium of Advanced Telecommunications (COTA) and two unspecified cablcecos based in Galicia and Asturias. Prior to the MITYC’s decision, some 33 parties – including around a dozen mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) had expressed an interest in participating in the tender. The regulator has indicated that the auctions will commence on 30 June 2011, with multiple rounds of bidding ascending in value.
