Venezuelan state-run telco CANTV has revealed that it aims to launch commercial satellite TV services in the fourth quarter of this year. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, CANTV previously announced plans to launch pay-TV services over the Venesat-1 satellite platform sometime in 2011, following a government announcement in November 2009 that set 2010 as the original launch target. A regulatory directive in October 2010 authorised a request made by CANTV to provide commercial direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV broadcasting nationwide. However, plans for commercial IPTV services are not so clear, as previously mooted target dates for the introduction of the fixed broadband-based service in late-2009 and late-2010 passed without launch. CANTV has undergone a lengthy IPTV trial and development programme, and had been expected to launch a trial for 67,000 users in 2011, with a goal of signing up 600,000 broadband TV viewers by 2015, although there has been no recent announcement on progress of the project.
