PLDT targets end-2011 to complete BPL tests

The Philippines’ largest telecoms group Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) says it is looking to complete tests of broadband over power line (BPL) technology by the end of 2011. The telco is currently carrying out trials of BPL services in parts of the capital Manila in selected apartment blocks. The Manila Times quotes the group’s chairman Manuel Pangilinan as saying that the next phase will see further tests carried out in a ‘residential setting, in a residential subdivision,’ and incorporating up to a thousand homes. Ultimately, PLDT is hoping to deliver commercial BPL services to some 4.5 million customers of its affiliate firm Manila Electric (Meralco).
