TeliaSonera drops Polkomtel bid

An anonymous source close to the sale of Polish cellco Polkomtel has revealed that Swedish telecoms group TeliaSonera has dropped out of the running. Reuters reports that Polish media mogul Zygmunt Solorz-Zak and private equity group Apax have submitted final bids while a joint venture between Telenor and Bain Capital is ‘wavering’ and may also pull out. Final-round bids for Polkomtel, worth an estimated USD6.6 billion were, due on Friday.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Polkomtel (which operates under the Plus brand) claimed 29% of Polish wireless subscribers at the end of March 2011, with 13.7 million users, slightly behind rival Orange Poland (30%) but ahead of T-Mobile Poland (28%), P4 (12%) and CenterNet (1%).
