Ziggo looks to mobile services to put pressure on KPN, rivals

31 May 2011

Dutch cableco Zesko Holdings (Ziggo), which is currently considering a share sale which could raise as much as EUR1.5 billion (USD2.1 billion), is reportedly working on launching mobile services in the country in a bid to increase competitive pressure on incumbent operator KPN. Bloomberg cites a spokeswoman for the regulator OPTA, Harriet Garvelink, as saying that the company must launch a commercial service before January 2012, using the 100,000 mobile numbers it was assigned by the watchdog this year. Ziggo spokesman Martijn Jonker responded only by saying: ‘If we’re going to enter the mobile market, it would be step by step’. The cableco plans to give more details on its wireless plan later this year, he said.
