4G Cameroon, the local subsidiary of privately-owned Swiss company 4G Africa, has launched commercial mobile WiMAX services for residential and business customers under the brand ‘YooMee’, Journal Du Cameroun reports. The wireless network is initially available in the city of Douala, but services will be expanded to the capital Yaounde during the summer. The company aims to provide affordable, reliable and state-of-the-art internet access at download speeds of up 640kbps. CommsUpdate reported earlier this month that solutions and service provider 4G Solutions completed the first phase of 4G Africa’s WiMAX network deployment. The vendor was contracted to provide a full end-to-end WiMAX network integration and OSS/BSS infrastructure, while Alvarion was selected as a WiMAX RAN vendor in December 2010. 4G Cameroon says it was awarded a licence to provide WiMAX services by telecoms regulator Agence de Regulation des Telecommunications (ART) in early 2010.
