Telia not down with OTT: gives free VoIP the red light in Amsterdam

20 May 2011

A spokesperson for Swedish telecoms heavyweight TeliaSonera has told a 4G conference that the operator does not intend to allow free over-the-top (OTT) VoIP services over its Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband network in the future. Speaking at the LTE World Summit in Amsterdam, Tommy Ljunggren, TeliaSonera’s vice president for system development (mobility services), clarified that any VoIP services accessed over its 4G networks will be paid-for, although the company has not yet revealed a business model for charging for such services. He added that VoIP is currently not allowed over Telia’s 3G or 4G networks, which block or throttle IP voice application traffic.
