Azerfon selects NSN for LTE rollout, network modernisation

Azeri mobile network operator Azerfon has signed a network modernisation contract with Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), Trend Azerbaijan reports. Azerfon, which provides services under the brands Nar Mobile and Azerfon-Vodafone, will invest over USD65 million in the modernisation of its GSM network and expansion of its 3G infrastructure, as well as the rollout of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. Work has already begun by NSN and is slated for completion by the end of 2011. ‘We have selected NSN… as our vendor for network expansion and modernisation, as a result of which we will have over 1,600 sites (2G/3G/LTE) by the end of 2011,’ commented Jurgen Peetz, CEO of Azerfon, adding: ‘This year we will expand our network to the underground, thereby having high quality coverage not only in metro stations, but also everywhere on the tube system in Baku. Our aim is to provide customers of our brands, Nar Mobile and Azerfon-Vodafone, with a high performance network, and the best services and prices.’
