Subscriber base shrinks following mandatory registration

12 May 2011

According to data released by the Postal Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), the country’s wireless subscriber base has fallen 17.8% following the disconnection of unregistered users. Since the 28 February deadline for registering, around 2.4 million connections have been disconnected, of which 1.4 million were Econet Wireless subscribers, 692,000 at Telecel, and 300,000 at state-owned NetOne. The watchdog originally ordered the cellcos to register their users by 3 August 2010, but at that date only 58% had registered, forcing an extension of the deadline.
