TelOne to resume fibre-optic project

11 May 2011

Zimbabwean telco TelOne is set to resume work on its fibre-optic cable project linking the capital, Harare, to the country’s second largest city, Bulawayo, and to the border post town of Beitbridge. NetOne MD Hampton Mhlanga said the project –valued at USD15 million – was aimed at upgrading the existing infrastructure as well as increasing data and telecoms connectivity in the countryside. The cable is being laid by Chinese contractors, but was delayed due to problems with work permits and visas. In the eastern part of the country, fibre-optic cable connections were completed last year linking Harare to Zimbabwe’s fourth largest city, Mutare, and to Beira in Mozambique.
