Telecom Namibia upgrades VSAT to reach more broadband users

5 May 2011

Telecom Namibia has deployed a SkyEdge II broadband VSAT satellite network to provide network connectivity for businesses and residential customers across the country, including telephony and high speed internet access to remote communities. Oiva Angula, Senior Manager for Corporate Communications at Telecom, said of the deployment: ‘The SkyEdge II VSAT solution offers Telecom a most suitable product choice to meet internet connectivity needs for residential consumers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well as corporate networks and backhaul applications for other telecom service providers.’ The new network replaces older equipment including Dialaway VSAT and Faraway VSAT and enables the connection of additional locations to broadband services. The implementation of the 600-site Sky Edge II network started in the middle of 2010 and is in the final stages of completion. The new network will also be used to deliver the company’s ‘Wi-Space’ Wi-Fi hotspot service in hotels and other tourist destinations throughout Namibia.
