Royal KPN snaps up Dutch cable rival Caiway

3 May 2011

BroadbandTVNews reports that the Netherlands’ largest telco, KPN (or Royal KPN as it is also known), has acquired the country’s fourth largest cable services operator CAIW Holding (Caiway) for an undisclosed sum. Caiway currently has 158,000 homes connected to its network and if the deal is ratified by local regulators such as the NMa, its takeover marks KPN’s move back into the Dutch cable market. It is understood KPN has reached agreement with the owners of CAIW Holding, CIF Investment, and Caiway’s management team concerning a deal to buy 100% of CAIW Holding’s services division. The agreement however, does not include the purchase of the physical networks themselves which remain in the possession of Rabo Bouwfonds’ Communication Infrastructure Fund (CIF) and the regional cable networks (most of which are municipality owned).

The paper notes that Caiway currently offers triple-play telephony, internet and TV services in Westland, Midden-Delfland, Schiedam, Maassluis, Aalsmeer, Uithoorn, IJsselstein, Lopik (Benschop), Halderberge (Oudenbosch), Den Haag (in the Wateringse Veld area), Gouda en omgeving, Hilvarenbeek, parts of Capelle a/d IJssel, Loenen aan de Vecht, Krimpen aan den IJssel and Utrechtse Heuvelrug (Doorn). As at 31 March 2011 it counted 143,000 basic TV customers, 74,000 broadband users and 33,000 IP telephony subscribers. It was also the first cableco to boast an all-digital TV network after switching off its analogue signal on 10 October 2010. Commenting on the deal Caiway chief executive Aart Verbree said: ‘With the technological knowledge and experience of KPN, we continue to invest in the best possible service to our customers. Caiway is a forerunner in the Dutch cable market, as with the introduction of 100% digital television services in 2010. With the rollout of a high speed fibre-optic network by CIF and strong shareholder KPN we can realise our ambition in the long-term the most reliable and fast network with its advanced services to our customers. The team within Caiway look forward to the opportunities this new situation allows for further professional and personal growth.’
