Soyuz launches its 17th market

Soyuz Telecom has launched WiMAX services in the town of Vsevolozhsk in the St Petersburg region, to take the total number of towns serviced to 17. The company offers business and residential subscribers a combination of fixed and mobile broadband services over its 802.16e-based networks. TeleGeography’s 4G research service reports that Soyuz Telecom holds 47 2.5GHz licences in Tier 3 (up to 250,000 inhabitants) and Tier 4 (up to 100,000 inhabitants) areas across 80 regions of Russia, and plans to deploy WiMAX networks in around 500 small towns in total. The company began commercial operations in 2009 and has said that it expects to have a significant market position within 24 months of operation.
