MTI purchases Bayan's fixed-wireless division

Multimedia Telephony Inc (MTI) of the Philippines has reportedly acquired the fixed-wireless assets of fellow operator Bayantel Telecommunications (Bayan), The Manila Times reports. The paper reports a filing made by MTI with the Ninth Division of the Court of Appeals in which the telco confirms its acquisition of Lopez-controlled Bayan’s wireless landline assets as part of the latter’s strategy to exit from rehabilitation. The paper adds that MTI’s purchase is not expected to lead to a consolidation or merger, nor will it lead to the removal of either firm’s status as a legal entity. Bayan’s CDMA-based fixed-wireless platform is seen as an ideal fit for MTI, given that it uses the same technology the new owner employs to deliver local exchange services.
