J:COM reports rising profit, revenue in 1Q11

Japanese multiservice operator (MSO) Jupiter Telecommunications (J:COM) said revenue for the three months ended 31 March 2011 increased 4.1% compared with the corresponding period of last year to JPY91.764 billion (USD1.12 billion). Operating income also climbed 18.3% year-on-year to JPY20.631 billion and net income attributable to J:COM shareholders increased 23.4% to JPY10.363 billion. The operator said that despite fierce competition from major telecommunications and other competitors in the lead up to the complete changeover to terrestrial digital broadcasting (on 24 July 2011), it increased the total number of subscribing households by 4.9% y-o-y to more than 3.454 million. Total RGUs rose 7.4% to 6.448 million, of which 2.718 million were CATV customers (up 4.6%), 1.715 million were broadband users (+7.0%) and 2.015 million were fixed telephony subscribers.
